Transfer season is here

Ah post Tour transfers. This is the time when we all speculate on who will go where and what kit your favorite rider will wear in 2008.

So far we have Oscar Pereiro going to Quick Step as that team looks for a GC rider to make their team more complete. While Pereiro is an upgrade, I don’t think Quick Step will be seen as a threat to win a Grand Tour any time soon. Posthumous wins do not count.

Axel Merckx is going… home. After speculation of another year as part of a Jonathan Vaughters led ProTour candidate, Axel has decided to call it quits.

Vaughters has snagged time trial specialist David Millar to join his Team Slipstream for 2008. Also heading to Slipstream are David Zabriskie and Christian Vandevelde from CSC. On the build up of his team to go ProTour, Vaughters is quoted as saying: “Be vewy vewy quiet, I’m hunting Hincapie.”

Thirty seven year-old Manuel Beltran stays with Liquigas and confirms his place as the wise old man of the peloton.

The fun is just beginning.
