When the IOC Ethics Commission thinks you are out of line…

Wow.  Having the IOC disapprove of you is pretty big stuff.  It’s like Tony Soprano disapproving of your business operations.  Well, the IOC says Dick should bite his tongue more as he executes his position of authority and responsibility.  So what does he do?  He shoots his mouth off at Armstrong.

In this morning’s Cyclingnews, Pound takes another shot at Lance Armstrong, saying the UCI should look again at the 7-time Tour champion.  In the old days when there was a rabid dog loose in the neighborhood, someone would put it down.  Where is the equivalent here?

Until Lance, cycling was the only popular world sport in which the U.S. didn’t dominate.
Until Lance, Europeans could smugly indulge the occasional brash American doing well in their bike races.
Until Lance, there were no big fish to fry in terms of a doping scandal…why bother going after LeMond, or team 7-Eleven or any other moderately successful cyclists, while Europeans were still the usual champions?
Until Dick, there hasn’t been a resentful Canadian, with a Napolean complex about his country, in a position to attack the symbol of American dominance in a totally European sport. (many Canadians see their country as being more European than North American)

As a Canadian, Dick Pound resents Canada’s role as dependent kid sister to the U.S. As self-identified Eurotrash, Dick resents that an unapologetic American, from Bush’s Texas of all places, embarassed the other world cyclists for 7 years.

I think this attack on Lance two years after his retirement is about so much more than cycling.

Lance was right about this guy…he’s a disaster!

To set the record straight, I think the word Lance used was Clown. 🙂

  3. Ed says:

Actually Jim, the quote was, [Armstrong also called Pound a “clown” who is an “absolute disaster when it comes to giving interviews.”]

  4. pelotonjim says:

    True, I stand corrected
