In my musing of cycling’s worst case scenario, I felt that the Grand Tours would use the failed Operation Puerto to forward their own agenda of power. ASO boss Patrice Clerc and his apprentice Christian Prudhomme(below) are doing just that. Sensing weakness in Pat McQuaid’s mishandling of Operation Puerto, Clerc is taking full advantage to exact his revenge.
Patrice staked out his position by firing the first salvo at the UCI and Operation Puerto.
“What kind of twisted mind can expect to lead cycling out of its crisis by attacking the locomotive of the train?”
Then, Clerc followed it by calling the PorTour effort “a failed coup d’etat” and the UCI should be focused on doing thier own job as regulators and not venture into the economic world by trying to take control of the very lucrative TV contracts from the Grand Tours.
