The movie opens up with our hero in the best form of his life. He enters the new season freed from seven years of servitude. Catches an unlucky break by having to cover a teammate in the tour of Flanders. Then, he goes to Paris-Roubaix and is the final selection with two teammates and isolates the unbeatable World Champion only to suffer a tragic injury due to a freak breakdown.
Forgoing surgery, our hero fails to return to form at the Tour de France. But his peak comes at the right time for a late season stage race. 100 meters from victory he is knocked to the ground by the man who would take his title.
Returning to home, the national championships happen to be in his adopted home town. So, what else, he takes an impressive victory.
